MORE ABOUT ME

After 2 kids I found myself burnt out and overwhelmed by motherhood all the while wondering how I got to that point.  After finding out I was pregnant with our 3rd I decided something needed to change - ME!  That's when I really started my journey on becoming the mother I wanted to be, finding myself in systems and routines that served me!

You Are Not Failing—You Are Invited to Recalibrate When the Homeschool Steam Fades

Because motherhood and homeschooling are not about perfection—they are about showing up with intention.

If I’m being honest, I’ve been inconsistent lately. Between having a new baby (Riot, my third!), losing steam, and navigating huge, necessary changes in our home rhythm, consistency has simply been tough. My husband, Karsten, now works for my dad’s construction company. That’s a good thing! But it completely flipped our schedule—he’s now gone from an hour or two after we wake up until dinner.

The sudden shift meant a lot more childcare and housework landed squarely on my shoulders during the day. I’m still not totally caught up, and it’s a big reminder of a topic that I am personally struggling with as a first-time homeschool mom: what happens when that homeschool steam fades?

We all start the school year with that beautiful spark—we're excited, we can't wait to dive into the curriculum, and we’re ready to reclaim routine. I felt that fire a couple of months ago, but now? My energy has dipped. I'm hitting a wall, and I find myself wanting to be more spontaneous and less structured.

If you’re feeling this too, here is the truth: You are not failing. You are simply invited to recalibrate.

Working Through the Burnout: The Invitation to Recalibrate

It is easy to let the initial excitement turn into exhaustion as the novelty wears off. Maybe you had high expectations for this year, only to realize, "This is not really what I thought it was going to be."

Here's my anchor thought for you: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Your homeschool will never ever thrive if you are not taking care of yourself.

The first and most important thing you can do when the steam fades is to give yourself permission to be human and check in with you.

  • Are you drinking enough water?
  • Are you eating a real meal or just snacking off your kids' plates?
  • Are you doing something you genuinely enjoy each week?

For me, this means a morning routine. Waking up just ten to thirty minutes before my kids completely changes my day. It gives me time to read, journal, have coffee by myself, or read a devotional. This small space reminds me of who I am outside of being a mom.

Redefining Education as a Lifestyle (Again)

Losing steam often means your current routines are not working anymore, and that is totally okay. Your rhythms should be revisited and adjusted, especially in your first year. I’ve already added and taken things away, and it has totally shifted our day for the better.

Instead of fighting the new season, look for ways to simplify, simplify, simplify.

  • Audit your schedule: Is it too full? Too many subjects? Too many commitments? Visualize what a perfect homeschool day would look like, and see how you can move your current life closer to that.
  • Embrace Structured Flexibility: You get to decide what fits your family. Maybe you take Fridays off, or you follow an "on-off" pattern (five weeks on, one week off). This is the freedom we chose this path for!
  • Be Selective with Curriculum: You are the teacher, and you have the power to pick and choose what your students need to learn. You don't have to start a textbook at the front and finish it at the back. Right now, my focus is on the bare minimum basics (language arts and math) and truly focusing on relationships.

Revisit Your Why (Find Your Clarity)

When you’re feeling lost, you need to come back to the beginning—why did you decide to homeschool in the first place? This realization became my anchor during our own family transition.

For my husband and me, our "why" centered on a few key things:

  • More Connection: I wanted to know my kids more and be a part of their learning, not just oversee it.
  • Whole School Education: We wanted to be in charge of what they learned.
  • Travel Flexibility: We wanted to be on our own time and not be held back from traveling to see family.

When you remember your why, everything else becomes simpler and gives you clarity. Don't let the noise of comparison distract you. Just because you see another homeschool family doing "more" doesn't mean it's right for you. Simplify your days; it just means you're creating space to actually enjoy this whole process.

If You’re Standing at a Crossroads

Maybe you are feeling isolated right now. Homeschooling can be lonely when you don't have a local community around you. If so, reach out! Try to connect with one other homeschool mom who understands what you’re going through—whether that's through a local library, a co-op, or online groups.

Whatever big shift you are navigating right now, here’s what I want you to know:

  • You don’t need everyone’s approval to begin again.
  • You don’t have to run at someone else’s pace.
  • You can start small.

Action creates clarity. And when you trust yourself, you’ll find the next right step for your family.

Here’s a journal prompt for you: What could I simplify right now that would bring me more peace?

Keep pushing forward. Keep doing what you know is best for your children. Slowing down does not mean you're giving up.

Final Thoughts

When you show up with intention, not perfection, you are already winning. You are doing something important, brave, and meaningful in choosing this path.

And you already have what it takes.
